Like many cities in Japan, Aomori is an interesting mix of the old and the new.

Near the coast, you’ll find a high-tech bridge extending alongside time-worn office buildings and apartments. Though the buildings may be old, they’ve been retrofitted with modern utilities to attend to the needs of their current inhabitants.

While walking down Amenity Street, Aomori’s main boulevard, it’s not uncommon to see a woman dressed in a traditional kimono walking shoulder to shoulder with office workers wearing modern business attire.

Turn a corner and you’ll find traditional stone figures that have stood tall for many decades, only now they’re dressed in the latest fashions.

Somehow in this mix of old and new– modern and traditional– Aomori finds a balance where these polar opposites coexist in complete harmony.

It just feels natural.
